The founding ministries
The founding ministry of the Holy Faith Sisters in the 1850s was the preservation of the faith of Catholic orphans and destitute children. Margaret Aylward set up St. Brigid’s Orphanage, which was unique in Ireland at that time as she pioneered long-term fosterage. Today the work of St. Brigid's still continues but adapted to the needs of our times, as natural parents and children are reunited, when requests are made.

Margaret and her companions established many schools also to give Catholic education to the poorest in society. She also worked to strengthen family units by giving them the means to start earning a living.

The blossoming of ministries
For many years education was the core ministry of the Holy Faith congregation. Today, while some sisters continue in primary, secondary and third-level education, the range of ministries is very diversified.

Sisters now also share their talents and gifts in parishes, prisons and hospitals. We provide faith development programmes, spiritual direction, counselling and pastoral care and are involved in social justice issues and care of the earth. Community life and prayer sustain the mission and ministry of each Holy Faith sister.

Holy Faith foundations abroad
Since 1947, Holy Faith foundations have been established abroad, initially in Trinidad and then in U.S.A. (California and Louisiana), New Zealand and Australia. There were also foundations in Samoa, Mexico and Peru for a number of years.

The vision for the future
A key saying of Margaret Aylward’s is: God’s Will will be your polar star … view it calmly and steadily. In these challenging times, Holy Faith Sisters seek God’s will for us today through the Chapter 2005 calls of Conversion, Discernment and Transformation.
